Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu God, enjoys unique stature as the first deity to be worshipped before commencement of any auspicious ritual or event. Also known as “Vighneshwara” or ‘remover of obstacles’, he bestows prosperity and good fortune on his devotees. Ganesha symbolism is complex and intriguing, with the God always depicted with an elephant’s face, a huge body and four arms. Other interesting aspects of his form include a snake wrapped around his stomach, a mouse as his vehicle and the axe and lotus in his upper arms.

Each unique symbol of his form represents the different qualities of this magnificent god, who inspires devotion in the minds of Hindus everywhere. The elephant-head symbolizes strength, courage and wisdom. His large belly is thought to contain the entire universe. The snake around it stands for the divine energy that permeates life. The axe symbolizes his ability to destroy ignorance, while the lotus indicates purity. His vehicle, the mouse, stands for human ego and greed that Ganesha helps to overcome.

According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Ganesha is the son of Shiva and Parvathi. He is a patron of arts and the deity of knowledge, and enjoys various other titles including Ganapati and Vinayaka.

Mantras like the Ganapati Dhyanam, Ganesha beeja mantra and Vakratunda Mantra are employed in the worship of this deity. There are also many hymns and musical compositions that praise this Lord. Although he is worshipped every day, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are specially dedicated to Ganesha.

Lord Ganesha likes offerings of fresh flowers, incense and fruits. Ladoos and modaks are his favorite sweets and are offered to him on special occasions.
